Category: Network

Wireless Services will centrally manage the acquisition, installation, operation and maintenance of wireless access points for managed agencies. DoIT has standardized on Cisco for wireless LAN offering. Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) services are useful to users who need the flexibility to roam, whether in the office or in the field, and still be able to connect to their respective LANs.

Product Features and Descriptions

Standard

  • A hardware device that acts as a communication hub for users of a wireless device to connect to a wired LAN
  • A Service Set Identifier (SSID) providing access to the internal network of the State of Illinois. It is intended solely for use by State of Illinois owned devices. All Microsoft Windows devices must be joined to the Illinois.gov or a cross-forest trusted domain. All non-Microsoft Windows devices must have installed the Mobile Iron MDM client.  Wireless devices are granted access to filtered Internet and the agency intranet to which that device is assigned. This is a wireless network with machine authentication which allows users to connect based on AD credentials and maps them to their appropriate agency subnet.  Users can run login scripts so they may have access to drive mappings, applications, etc.
  • This SSID provides the Guest network and filtered Internet access.  Access to State of Illinois Guest wireless networks is intended for the use of visitors to State of Illinois facilities when it is convenient or useful for the State to provide such access. It is the responsibility of the visitor to ensure that personal devices run up-to-date anti-virus software and install security patches as issued by the operating-system vendor.  All visitors must log in with State of Illinois-provided credentials by the agency's administrator. DoIT Technical Support is not available for non-State of Illinois-issued devices that are used to access the guest network

Industry Networking

  • Networks designed on the 802.11 wireless specifications issued by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE)
  • 802.11 specifications that path-sharing compatible with the Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) Ethernet protocol
  • 802.11 specifications providing the flexibility to simultaneously use standard equipment from a variety of vendors pursuant to the Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance (WECA)
  • Implementation of Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) wireless LAN technology that works in resisting interference while supporting a higher degree of reliability
  • Highly-efficient wireless performance leading to enhanced load balancing by means of clients being able to re-associate among a variety of access points in an environment of distinct frequency channels that do not overlap
